The Missing Roadmap

The Missing Roadmap

article roadmap & strategy Aug 12, 2024

I’ve spent a lifetime immersed in the service industry, from the trenches of service to the executive suites. And what I’ve learned is this: too many businesses are driving aimlessly.

I started my working life as a paperboy, a humble beginning that instilled in me a deep-rooted appreciation for the fundamentals of service. Over the decades, I've navigated diverse industries, always paying close attention to the inner workings of the organizations I worked for or with. I’ve witnessed firsthand the stark contrast between companies that thrive and those that merely survive.

One observation I’ve made that has been consistently true: far too many companies lack a well-defined business roadmap. It’s as if countless entrepreneurs and managers are setting sail without a compass, relying on intuition and luck to guide them across the treacherous oceans ahead. This is particularly true for small and medium-sized businesses, which I consider to be the backbone of our economy.

Don’t get me wrong, I admire the entrepreneurial spirit. The courage to take a risk, to build something from scratch, is commendable. But without a strategic blueprint, even the most passionate and talented individuals can find themselves adrift.

I’ve seen it time and again: businesses that start with a spark of innovation but fizzle out due to a lack of direction. Companies that experience rapid growth but can’t sustain it because they haven’t scaled their operations effectively. And, perhaps most regrettable, businesses with immense potential that never reach their full heights.

The problem isn’t always a lack of effort or know-how. It’s often a failure to recognize the importance of a solid business model. Too many entrepreneurs focus on the day-to-day operations, neglecting to develop a long-term strategy. They might excel in sales or product development, but without a clear roadmap, they’re building a business on a shaky foundation.

It’s time for a shift in mindset, of how we view our business. Companies need to move beyond the notion that business success is solely reliant on instinct, luck, or the heroic efforts of a few. A well-crafted business model, coupled with a detailed roadmap and strategy, is the cornerstone of sustainable growth. This doesn’t mean stifling your innate creativity or innovation; on the contrary, a solid business model provides a framework for these to flourish.

By understanding the intricacies of your business, you can identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Armed with this knowledge, you can create a roadmap that charts a clear course forward. It’s about making informed decisions rather than being purely reactive.

Remember, building a successful business is a marathon, not a sprint. It requires endurance, strategy, and a willingness to change and adapt. So, whether you’re a seasoned entrepreneur or just starting out, take the time to develop a comprehensive roadmap and strategy. It could be the difference between simply surviving and truly thriving.
